Amateurs at the Auditorium

The early 1930's saw a boom in amateur hockey in Rhode Island with the R.I. Auditorium providing a popular venue. The 1930 New England Open Amateur Tournament was played at the Auditorium with Corona A.C. of Riverside and the East Side Hockey Club representing Rhode Island. Art Chapman and Hugo Harrington, star forwards for the Reds, acted as referees. The East Siders dropped New Bedford 4-0 before losing to Brookville 2-0 in the semis. The West Point of Nashua, NH club, comprised of many French Canadian stars, beat the Coronas 4-0 and won over Brookville 1-0 in overtime in the finals. The Rhode Island Amateur Hockey Club lost to Gloucester 1-0, the Pawtucket All-Stars were upended before the Quincy Club 1-0 and the Mount Saint Charles Grads beat New Bedford Garwoods 1-0 in overtime before getting blanked by the Quincy Club 1-0 in the 1931 New England Open Amateur Tournament. West Point retained their title with a 3-2 victory over Gloucester in the finals.
